Our Fertility "Friendship Quilt"

Please see the Quilt Below!!!

Many times when we are faced with challenges in our lives it can become overwhelming and can make us feel isolated and lonely. This was something I experienced when I was trying to get pregnant. Even though I had support from family and friends who knew about my infertility, most of the time they could not understand why I was subjecting myself to all of the tests, surgeries and other treatments to try to conceive a child. Usually the only ones who could understand the way I felt were women facing similar circumstances who I met throughout my journey with
infertility. For a woman to be told that she is infertile is to tell her that her body has failed her in the the most basic aspect of what makes her a woman, the ability to bare children. This Quilt is dedicated to women who are having problems trying to conceive and those facing infertility and it's here to remind us we are not alone. It also stands here to illustrate the implications of infertility and its effect on so many lives. We hope it will demonstrate the need for proper diagnosis, early treatment and health coverage for all of us faced with this life-changing health condition that most often challenges many aspects of a woman's life; her role as a woman, her marriage, and her faith.

See the Quilt below!!!

Women started making autographed quilts called "friendship quilts" in the 1840's. It was a way to keep precious signed remembrances of friends and family which many times were the only things connecting them to each other. Back in that time women most often would move away from their friends and relatives to more isolated homestead areas and they would take their friendship quilts as a reminder of a time when they lived among family and friends. The early quilts frequently had dedications and some contained poetic inscriptions while quilts made after the Civil War usually only had names and sometimes the city where the person lived. We got our inspiration for this fertility quilt from these women who cherished the memories of a time spent among family and old friends. We hope this Quilt will connect women in friendship and create a circle of support for all of us that will last a long time.
